~ Burgau ~
Burgau is a small,
friendly, traditional village with
loads of character and a fabulous beach!
The narrow cobbled streets twist and
turn bringing you past some small grocery shops and craft shops, and
bars and restaurants leading down to the superb beach, passing the slipway with a variety of colourful boats
belonging to local fishermen.
The safe, sandy beach at the bottom of the hill rarely gets crowded and is protected on both sides
by high cliffs - and the water is crystal clear!
The Burgau Beach Bar has a
reputation for good food and is the perfect place to quench your thirst,
enjoy a lovely plate of freshly cooked sardines, or whatever takes your
fancy! There are lots of other good restaurants and cafe/snack
bars in the village, many with lovely sea views, all of them friendly
and serving the best and freshest of local produce.
There
are a few small supermarkets, newsagents and some craft shops selling local
pottery, leather and jewellery.
It's not
unusual to see villagers cooking sardines for their lunch on
the street outside their house as has been done for
centuries. Lovely aromas!
There is a small market
each morning
near the bus stop. There is an ATM but no Bank, and the red Post Office
van comes each day at about 11.00, stopping near the Bus and Taxi stop and
this is well worth a photograph!
The
village people are very helpful and friendly, as are Portuguese people
in general. Many either speak English, or know someone who does, but they do
very much appreciate any attempts you make to speak their language!
There are superb walks
in the area, including a cliff top walk to Praia da Luz, from where, if
you are very energetic you can continue uphill to the beacon and carry
on to Porto do Mos and Lagos! Cliff top walks to the west take you to
Cabanas Velhas, Boca do Rio, Salema and beyond. The well-worn paths are
quite rugged but the terrific views and wildlife are very rewarding.
There is a regular bus service
to Praia da Luz about 3Km away, and to Lagos 10km away and a new service
which connects the beaches of Meia Praia, Luz and Salema and others.
