Burgau is a small, traditional village with
loads of character! The narrow cobbled streets twist and
turn bringing you past some small grocery shops and craft shops, and
bars and restaurants leading down to the superb beach at the bottom of
the hill, passing the slipway with a variety of colourful boats
belonging to local fishermen.
The safe, sandy beach is protected
on both sides by high cliffs and the water is blue green and crystal
clear.
The Burgau Beach Bar has a
reputation for good food and is the perfect place to quench your thirst,
enjoy a lovely plate of freshly cooked sardines, or whatever takes your
fancy! There are lots of other good restaurants and cafe/snack
bars in the village, many with lovely sea views, all of them friendly.
There are several small
supermarkets and grocery stores and a few craft shops selling local
pottery, leather and jewellery. There is a small market each morning
near the bus stop. There is an ATM but no Bank, and the red Post Office
van comes each day at about 11.00, stopping near the Bus and Taxi stop and
this is well worth a photograph!
The village people are very
helpful and friendly, as are the Portuguese people in general.
Many of them either speak English, or know someone who does, but they do
very much appreciate any attempts you make to speak their language!
There are superb walks in the
the area, including a walk over the rocks and cliffs to Praia da Luz, from where,
if you are very energetic you can continue uphill to the beacon and
carry on to Porto do Mos and Lagos!
There is a regular bus service
to Praia da Luz about 3Km away, and to Lagos 10km, and a new service
which connects the beaches of Meia Praia, Luz and Salema and others.
